Google on Monday honoured the life of Russian surgeon, professor, poet, and author Dr Vera Gedroits on her 151st birthday with a doodle. Gedroits is credited as the country’s first female military surgeon and one of the world’s first female professors of surgery.
She was also the first woman to serve as a physician in the Imperial Palace of Russia.
During the Russo-Japanese War, her initiative to perform abdominal surgeries against established policies changed the way battlefield medicine was performed. She pioneered the application of laparotomy for the treatment of abdominal wounds on the battlefront. During her time as a professor, she also authored several medical papers on nutrition and surgical treatments. Gedroits also published multiple collections of poems, and several nonfiction works, including the 1931 memoir simply titled Life. The book told the story of her journey that led to service on the front lines in 1904. The hospital in Fokino, Bryansk Oblast was named in Gedroits' honour and a memorial plaque was dedicated to her memory in front of the former Tsarskoe Selo palace hospital in Pushkin, Saint Petersburg.
